Richard Gevers is Head of Service Design and Delivery in South Africa’s Digital Services Unit (DSU), where he leads national digital transformation under the Presidency. His work centres on building citizen-focused digital infrastructure, improving public service delivery, and enabling open, interoperable public systems. He previously founded and led Open Cities Lab (OCL) and co-founded Tenji, developing data-driven civic technologies that support inclusive governance and urban development across Africa. He stepped down from all roles at both organisations in April 2025.

A recognised leader in digital government, digital public infrastructure, and service design, he regularly advises governments, global institutions, and civil society and is a frequent speaker on digital transformation, open governance, and civic tech. His work emphasises ethical, inclusive, and durable public infrastructure designed for real-world impact in the Global South. He has also held roles as Programme Director at Africa Data Hub, Non-executive Director at Innovate Durban, and Reference Group Member at the Civic Tech Innovation Network.

  • Presentation Title: MyMzansi: a unified platform for government services
  • Presentation 2-Line Description: What if accessing government services were as simple as using a single, trusted platform? South Africa is building MyMzansi to do exactly that: a unified system designed to connect citizens seamlessly to services across departments. This session offers a behind-the-scenes look at how trusted credentials, interoperable systems, and modern service design can bring existing identity infrastructure into seamless, secure, and scalable digital service delivery.
