Three days in Dublin - an insight and foresight into banknotes and ID documents
Among over 900 delegates from more than 60 countries were 170+ representatives from central banks, ministries and law enforcement, all key influencers for the banknote and ID document manufacturing industries. There were over 110 exhibitors to show them the latest technical capabilities and product developments of the supply industries to both sectors.
The motto and purpose of Intergraf’s Security Printers, International Conference & Exhibition is ‘Connecting issuing authorities and solution providers’. This 2018 edition, held in Dublin, Ireland on 21-23 March, fulfilled this promise completely.
The programme of the conference was divided into two parallel units – banknotes and ID documents - with an extensive joint session covering subjects that applied to both.
A series of presentations brought delegates in the ID sessions up to speed on the increasing danger of morphing as applied to passport photographs. In the banknote part, a presentation by Linus Neumann of the famed Chaos Computer Club looked at the psychology of cash and explored a world without it. Even he, a committed ‘cyber guy’, could not imagine how all the advantages of cash could be replicated in a cyber currency.
One of the highlights of the conference, a panel discussion on the ‘Future of cash’, moderated by journalist Joy Macknight of The Financial Times/The Banker, brought together Victoria Cleland, Chief Cashier of the Bank of England (BoE), who earlier gave a presentation of the BoE’s path to polymer banknotes, with Michael Lambert from the US Federal Reserve System and Leif Veggum from the Central Bank of Norway. The industry was represented by Wolfram Seidemann, CEO of G+D Currency Technology. Linus Neumann, of the Chaos Computer Club, again provided an alternative voice on the topic.
The next Security Printers will take place in Copenhagen on 23-25 October 2019.
