09:20-10:00KEYNOTE - The next 50 years: trust, identity, and the future we’re about to create

09:20-10:00KEYNOTE - The next 50 years: trust, identity, and the future we’re about to create

What does it take to secure trust in a world where identity is fluid, currency is becoming invisible, and technology is advancing faster than our ability to govern it?

In this opening keynote, Tom Koulopoulos will take us on a fast-paced, eye-opening journey from 1976 to 2026 - a fifty-year arc defined by exponential innovation, shifting power structures, and the quiet reinvention of how we establish trust at scale. From the birth of digital systems to the rise of AI and synthetic identity, the forces reshaping our world are the same ones redefining the very foundations of currency and identity.

But this isn’t a history lesson. It’s a wake-up call.

Drawing powerful connections between past inflection points and what lies ahead, Tom will challenge assumptions about security, authenticity, and control in a world where the line between physical and digital has all but disappeared. What does ‘identity’ mean when it can be generated, cloned, or decentralised? What happens to currency when trust shifts from institutions to algorithms? And most importantly, who decides?

With his signature clarity, energy, humour, and provocative insight, Tom will set the tone for the conference by reframing the next 50 years not as a continuation of the past, but as a fundamental socio-economic reset.

His message is simple and powerful: AI may be able to build the future, but we are the ones who must decide what kind of future to build.

09:50-10:10Keep calm and carry cash: Lessons on the unique role of physical currency across four crises

This session draws on a widely circulated ECB Economic Bulletin article to explore how different types of crises across the euro area consistently trigger sharp increases in cash demand. From financial turmoil and geopolitical tensions to health emergencies and infrastructure failures, the pattern is remarkably consistent: when uncertainty rises, people turn to cash.
The discussion will highlight why physical currency continues to matter in a digital age. Its offline functionality and universal acceptance make it a crucial safety net when financial systems or payment infrastructures come under pressure. Attendees will gain insight into the enduring role of cash in supporting resilience and stability during periods of stress.
