Matjaž Torkar has been serving in the Slovenian Police since 2003. His current duties as Deputy Station Commander of the Airport Police Station Brnik include supervising airport police officers and investigators; monitoring and advising on criminal investigations; training officers in Integrated Border Management; and overseeing the implementation of ICAO regulations and aviation security measures.
Matjaž began his career as a Police Officer at Ljubljana Airport, carrying out patrols and security checks before he joined the Border Control Team to perform first- and second-line border checks in 2006. Three years later, he was appointed Police Criminal Investigator and then, in 2013, Community Policing Officer, a role in which he advised provided Airport Police Officers and Border Police Officers, and provided document expertise for prosecutors as well as training on the detection of falsified documents and on the latest document forgery trends.
Matjaž graduated from the Police Academy in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and completed several training courses in false documents detection. He holds a bachelor's degree in Security Studies from the University of Maribor, Slovenia.
Morphing cases in Slovenia
Morphing attacks, a process that blends facial features of two or more subjects so that the resulting image resembles all subjects involved, pose a serious security threat globally. Drawing on real cases observed by Slovenian experts at the border in early 2020, this presentation will enquire into the manipulation of images during the document application process and into the weakening of the facial image as a trust anchor at the national as well as EU and international level.
