Sabine van Doremalen is Forensic Expert in both counterfeits and genuine banknotes. Her ambition is to analyse banknotes with a different perspective. Sabine started working at The Dutch National Bank (DNB) almost 4 years ago, after finishing her studies in study Forensic Science, with specialisation in biological traces.
Working for the central bank, which does not have forensic scope, Sabine can use her knowledge to apply forensic techniques with an 'out-of-the-box' view.
Within DNB, Sabine was responsible for several studies, the latest one including a thorough investigation of damaged banknotes. Sabine has particular interest in examining the behaviour of different banknotes.
In 2021, DNB started a study focussing on how different variables play a role in (possibly) damaging a banknote. This information is needed to objectively judge whether the given reason why that banknote has been damaged is questionable or not. Different conditions, such as heating, cooling, inorganic, or organic variables were selected to review how will they impact the security features of a banknote. Additionally, other conditions have been included, such as denominations, series (ES1 vs. ES2), amount, type of packaging, time, and methodology. This presentation will offer a perspective on the results obtained so far.
