Apprenticed as a Mechanical Field Engineer for power plant pump systems during his military service, Johannes Schaede was awarded German national laureate in brain research in 1977 and then began studies in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich.
Following further apprenticeships in newspaper and banknote printing, he joined the banknote machine design department of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) in Würzburg in 1983, and gradually rose to become KBA’s Vice President and Head of the Banknote Machine Division in 1992, a role that entailed responsibility for the design of KBA-GIORI’s whole production equipment line and for the banknote business.
In 2003, Johannes was appointed Technical Director and Member of the Executive Committee of KBA-GIORI, overseeing the entire R&D and technologies for the banknote production field. Five years later, he took over the position of CTO of the business unit Security managing technology and operations.
Johnannes invested his final years with KBA-GIORI in restructuring the Engineering department and handling standardisation for the mother company.
He is the author of numerous international patents in the fields of printing and banknote production, and significantly contributed to making KBA-GIORI a leading company in its industry.
Looking back at almost 40 years in the banknote industry, one may be tempted to view its development as a compulsory chain of events. Personal insights clearly reveal this to be wishful thinking.
