Nick Butt is the Head of the Future of Money Division at the Bank of England. He is responsible for forward looking policy, economics, as well as research on banknotes and digital currencies.
Nick has previously worked in several areas of the Bank: from 2015-2020, he led on the design and implementation of the Bank’s monetary policy and financial stability operations in the sterling market. Prior to that, he was a senior economist in the Bank’s monetary analysis area.
Nick holds a Master of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Politics and Economics.
The presentation will cover recent payment trends and how these have accelerated in the last two years, following the impact of COVID-19. Given the declining use of cash, but its continued importance, the presentation will explain how the industry and authorities in the UK are responding to ensure that cash remains on a sustainable and resilient footing. Finally, the presentation will touch on the Bank’s work on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), how this work is motivated by changes in money and payments, and is also consistent with the Bank’s commitment to continue to meet the public’s demand for physical banknotes.
