Banque de France has an internationally recognised expertise in the design and manufacture of banknotes thanks to a strong history of over 200 years in the banknote industry. With its subsidiary EuropaFi, the foremost public paper mill in Europe, the Banque de France has an integrated production facility combining a papermill and a banknote printing works. The model, which is unique among EU central banks, means that the entire production chain is concentrated in one location and allows the Bank to keep pace with the latest advances in banknote technology. Banque de France printing works reach an annual capacity of 2.8 billion banknotes; it is one of the leading European manufacturer of euro banknotes in terms of annual volume while producing also, for a significant part of its activity, currencies other than the euro for some twenty countries around the world.
Regarding its high security and banknotes paper activity, with an annual capacity of 4,800 tons of paper, EuropaFi is the first Euro paper producer and also provides banknote paper and security paper to other printers, in various formats (rolls or sheets), depending on the denomination or printing line for which it is intended.
Through its own Research and Development center, the Banque de France pursues a strategy of constant technological innovation in all areas of cash-related research and applications. It also has the largest research center in Europe dedicated to combating banknote counterfeiting.
To sum up, the Banque de France provides not only banknotes and security paper for all currencies, but also a range of services including the design of banknotes, counterfeit technical analyses and consultancy services in cash management and fraud prevention.
