Plenary __ Currency and identity: refocusing and setting priorities in a world of disruption and uncertainty
The world is changing and, to remain relevant, our industry must adapt. The security of identity documents and currency needs to be strengthened, but balancing goals for sustainability with increased costs, higher demand and complexity is paramount. Counterfeiting and fraud are still very real problems.
How can we navigate these uncertain times while carefully and strategically setting priorities to secure the future of currency and identity for the benefit of the citizens?
Thursday 19/10/2023 - Morning
Session 1 __ Responding to sustainability demands across the currency production and cash lifecycle
Organisations are facing new sustainability challenges in every aspect of currency: environmental, social and governance.
These must be balanced with central bank requirements to maintain a robust cash cycle. Methods - from design to raw material supply to production to cash processing - are being adapted to limit consequences for the environment. This includes raw materials with higher sustainability, solutions to extend the life of banknotes in circulation, low-impact processes as well as recycling.
From the paper mills and raw material suppliers to the print works and cash cycle, every step of production and use is being analysed. The ecological footprint of banknotes is also being closely monitored.
How can central banks and the industry fully embrace their social responsibility while maintaining efficient production and ensuring the security of banknotes?
Session 2 __ Innovations in secure identity documents and issuance processes
As criminals and criminal organisations become smarter, governments need to remain proactive by issuing new design concepts with new counterfeit deterrent technologies.
How are governments responding while experiencing an unprecedented high demand for travel documents?
What are the latest documents that have been issued that transform this landscape?
Session 3 __ CBDC
As world events reshape many supply chains, governments and industry need to keep operations working, without disruption to the cash cycle.
The growth of crypto currency and central bank digital currency (CBDG) has placed a new onus on central banks to regulate these new forms of payment, in addition to managing their physical currency programs and cash cycles.
The co-existence of cash and digital currency has become increasingly important. Or is CBDG the beginning of the end for cash? What is the impact of CBDC and how will central banks embrace it?
Session 4 __ Identity documents designed for the future
In the rapidly changing environment of identity documents, two governments will present their new solutions.
Design plays a crucial role in the recognition and acceptance of identity documents and passports.
This panel will address how they have integrated design with card construction and state-of-the-art security features.
Thursday 19/10/2023 - Afternoon
Session 5 __ Enhancing efficiency in banknote production and manufacturing
With increased sustainability and price pressure from central banks, industry is constantly improving manufacturing processes (paper, print, etc.) to achieve faster throughput, reduce energy consumption and strengthen quality.
What energy efficiency strategies are being deployed? What process steps are being automated, combined or reduced?
And how is the digitalisation of business processes impacting production?
Session 6 __ Challenges of identity verification
Following society’s mega-trend of digitisation, government regulations shaping identity management and credentialling keep evolving.
What are the opportunities and limits of physical, digital, and mobile ID verification?
And, as technologies used to produce false identities become ever more sophisticated, how are governments employing new technologies to issue and verify identities?
Session 7 __ Innovations in new banknote series
To develop a new note series strategy, central banks must first understand the threats that their current series are facing. Counterfeiting case studies and counterfeit trend analysis are critical to building this knowledge.
What are the new technologies, advanced design concepts and technical innovations incorporated in new series of banknotes to address this? How are new security features most effectively integrated? What public education strategies are most successful?
Learn from the introduction of the latest series.
Session 8 __ Managing the queue: advanced passenger processing
With the influx of travellers placing increased stress on airports and borders, using technology to enhance passenger and border crossing processing has become a necessity.
How does technology help and what are the latest best practices in large international airports?
Educating the public on the relevant technology remains one of the major challenges. What database systems can inform police officers and border guards on counterfeit or forged documents? How are security features machine authenticated? What new technologies are customs authorities using at airports and how is AI being deployed in document examination?
Session 9 __ The role and relevance of cash in society
Access to cash has opportunities and risks in terms of infrastructure, policies, legislation, etc. Does the use of cash cause changes in public behaviour? How do we make cash desirable for younger generations? Are there restrictions or national policies that reduce its use?
The provision of means of payment to citizens is a social responsibility of central banks. What are the latest cash management models and cash process trends? What is a central bank’s goal and vision for cash?
Session 10 __ Digitising travel credentials – goals and promises
Digital travel credentials promise to completely change the travel continuum - will they really?
While ‘digital’ introduces efficiencies, it won’t be universal for decades or perhaps centuries. Hence the importance of physical credentials coexisting with digital identification.
What are the recent digital endeavours - e.g., EU wallet, ICAO DTC, and digital seals? And the latest plans for digitising the traditional EU visa sticker?
Mobile driver’s license (MDL) ISO/IEC 18013-5 standards are being implemented in several countries around the globe. How are these securely issued and verified? What are implementation scenarios and applications beyond MDL? How do MDL and ePassport standards compare?
Panel __ From crisis to crisis: addressing unprecedented situations. How can our community contribute?
From the pandemic to global migration, governments worldwide have faced unprecedented crisis. These crisis have directly impacted both currency and identity as the policies, processes and technologies have had to evolve.
This panel will explore the impact of crises on our global society and how the currency and identity community can contribute to, and be a part of, the solutions.
