Alex Saunders is Specialist Identity Document Examiner attached to the National Document Fraud Unit (NDFU) of the United Kingdom Home Office, Borders and Enforcement Directorate. NDFU is the Home Office’s centre of expertise in the examination of travel documents and its centre of information concerning passports and travel documents.
Alex has worked at the NDFU since 2002, focusing on security document examinations and on the delivery of training in security document manufacture and the detection of fraudulent documents. She has extensive experience in providing training and advice to a wide variety of stakeholders within the UK Government and overseas. She is responsible for overseeing national training programmes, and for developing packages and programmes for the Home Office and other government departments.
Prior to joining NDFU, Alex worked with the UK Immigration Service at London Heathrow Airport and on attachment with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in China. Alex holds a Master of Science in the specialism of Identity Document Examination from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.
This presentation will focus on the latest threats against the UK passport and on the importance of training and partnerships with identity document manufacturers in empowering border officials, amongst other tactics, to confidently identify fake documents. We will argue that reliance on technology is not a good thing. Whilst we must advance, it is undeniable that something as simple as a high-quality cylinder mould watermark remains an effective countermeasure.
