Plenary __ Currency and identity: preparing for the future

Sharon Villafana joined the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago in 2007 after 20 years of experience in the commercial banking sector.

Sharon has served as a member of the Payments System Council; a body dedicated to the development of the National Payments System in Trinidad and Tobago, under the umbrella of the Central Bank, since its inception in 2001, and has contributed to the achievement of many of the strategic objectives of this body over the years.

Upon joining the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, she worked with the Bank’s Senior and Executive Management to institutionalise the function of Payments System Oversight at the Central Bank.

In July of 2016, Sharon assumed responsibility for the Banking Operations Department of the Central Bank. This includes, among other things, the issuance and redemption of currency, the provision of financial and advisory services as banker to the Government and the operation of the country’s RTGS and Cheque Clearing systems.
